The Dream Thieves is the second installment of Maggie Steifvater’s ‘The Raven Cycle’ and I am thoroughly obsessed. Rating: 4.5/5

Ronan is one of the raven boys—a group of friends, practically brothers, searching for a dead king named Glendower, who they think is hidden somewhere in the hills by their elite private school, Aglionby Academy. The path to Glendower has long lived as an undercurrent beneath town. But now, like Ronan’s secrets, it is beginning to rise to the surface—changing everything in its wake.

I tend to enjoy the more pained or traumatized characters the most. Characters that have really seen some shit and lived to drink away their misery. In The Raven Cycle, this character is Ronan Lynch, and I have been intrigued by him since the first book, The Raven Boys. So I was quite happy to find that The Dream Thieves delved deeper into the twisted mind of Ronan Lynch. Without giving much away, I was pleasantly surprised to learn just how important Ronan is to the story and Cabeswater. In fact, the entire idea of someone being able to take things out of their dreams and bring them to life is probably the most unusual and interesting plot point I have ever read about.

I have also never read a series with characters to fleshed out and uniquely their own. Each one has their own motivation for what they do, and their own ways of going about things. None of the characters stray from who they are, and each are written so profoundly different from each other. To write out one character would be to alter the metaphorical train tracks. I am highly impressed with the amount of detail that Maggie Stiefvater puts in each of her books, and I cannot wait to continue with the series.

I must say, that the arrival of new characters was confusing at first, but ended up being a much-needed addition to the story. There were several plot twists that I didn’t see coming, which is a testament to how well it was written, as I am very quick to figure out what is going to happen next. I thoroughly enjoyed The Dream Thieves, and cannot think of a single complaint.
