Excerpt:

“Did you just kick me, little girl?” The man growled.

He was so angry; he’d forgotten about his gun that had slid across the floor.

“Yeah,” Zoe said as she took a step towards him. “Did you want me to do it again?”

From over her shoulder, she heard Chief Park’s voice ring out across the room. “Zoe, get back here behind me.”

“Yeah, Zoe,” said her assailant in a teasing voice. “Go run and get behind the nice police officer. Maybe he’ll protect you.”

She tilted her head, staring at him. This was going to be fun.

“I don’t think I’m the one that needs protecting tonight,” Zoe said. Her eyes were fierce as she stared him down. She watched as the confidence in his eyes wavered.

And then she ran, not back behind the desk, but straight towards the man that stood in front of her.

He took a step forward and swung his fist out towards her head. She ducked and then came up to plant a satisfying fist into his side. She felt her blow hit and heard the sound of pain as it escaped his lips. He stumbled back a little but recovered quickly. He swung out again, this time with his left arm. She dodged, but not quick enough. The blow grazed the left side of her shoulder. He was a big guy. And he was angry. The top of her arm went numb from the blow.

When his fist didn’t make full contact with her arm, the motion had pulled his body forward. His back was slightly exposed, and that was enough for her. Zoe leapt on his back, wrapping her right arm around his neck. She grasped her right wrist with her other hand and held on tight as she squeezed the breath from his lungs.

“Zoe!” she heard Chief Park yell at her from across the room.

Zoe held on. She wasn’t planning on killing him. She was just going to put him to sleep.

“Zoe!” yelled the chief again. “Let him go!”
