It seems like this is the year for male acts. Fun.Jay-Z, Kanye West, The Black Keys, Mumford & Sons and Frank Ocean are leading with the most Grammy Nominations, each with 6 under their belt this year. For the complete list of alllllllll the nominations you can visit the Grammy’s website here.

Okay, now let’s discuss all this. First we’re going to be really biased, and then we’re going to be unbiased. As a fan girl I am so excited that Fun. is not only nominated for a Grammy, but that they’re tied for most Grammy Awards with a total of 6. I’ve been a fan of their for years now, and I was even a fan of The Format, which was the band Nate was in before Fun. I’m also such a huge fan of Ed Sheeran that it sometimes is physically painful, and the amount of pride that filled me when I learned he was nominated for Song of the Year is unfathomable. I have to say that Frank Ocean really did have a great album, and I’m hoping that he wins Album of the Year if nothing else. It’s definitely deserved. I’m also rooting for The Lumineers to win Best New Artist.

Now, there were some nominations that I didn’t agree with. While Carly Rae Jepsen’s song Call Me Maybe is really catchy and was a lot of fun for about 2 days, it’s not anymore. It’s also not a good song….. or at least not good enough to be nominated for a Grammy when other songs weren’t nominated. What bothers me is that the Grammys are supposed to be a elite club, and a generic, repetitive pop song about giving a stranger your number doesn’t merit a Grammy Nomination in the slightest. Her voice didn’t sound great, the music didn’t sound great, the lyrics are ridiculous, and I’m almost angry that she can say she was nominated for more than one Grammy because of that song. And I am definitely angry that that song in particular gets to add it’s name to the long list of great music that has been nominated in that category. I noticed that Taylor Swift’s song We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together was nominated as well, and that bothers me too. It seems like the Grammys is doing what every radio and every other awards show is doing and just nominated the more popular artists and songs as opposed to nominating what’s actually deserving. T Swift had a lot of great songs on her album, but her first single was not one of them. The second verse is barely even a verse. It’s just two sentences. As a music lover it’s things like this that make me just a tad bit sad.

Overall, this nominations this year look a lot better than last year. I’m looking forward to attending the ceremony in 2013, and sharing all the great moments with you guys. Let me know what you think of the nominations in the comments below. Are there any artists you think should have been nominated instead?
