Guest Post:

The Prompt: Kai kind of ghosts Winter after he moves away. Ghosting is something that happens to a lot of people these days, with the use of social media and dating apps. Have you ever been ghosted? Have you ever ghosted someone else?

I found this to be an interesting question as I didn’t write the story thinking that Kai had ghosted Winter; however, he kind of did. Winter and Kai were teenagers when social media wasn’t a thing, at least in the outskirts of Perth, Western Australia when you were lucky to have a slow internet connection. Email and internet messaging had only just started taking off. And mobile phones? Forget about it! Teenagers used the home phone to communicate, wrote letters, and left notes for each other. Kai had to leave Perth suddenly and had to sever ties with Perth, for the reason that is discovered at the end of the story. From his perspective, he had to start a new life and attempted to forget about Winter. Kai left her a goodbye note without any contact information, so she had no way to reach him. From Winter’s point of view, at the very least, he could have written to her. But as the story goes, neither character could forget the other.

Thankfully, I’ve never been obviously ghosted by someone I’ve dated. I didn’t really get into dating apps, but there would have been times that someone didn’t return a message, and that would have been the end of it. I have, however, been kind of ghosted by a friend. One minute we were close and regularly caught up; the next minute, weeks turned into months, and my few attempts to catch up were brushed aside. Their entire demeanour changed towards me. The situation made me doubt myself and wonder what I did to cause that response. However, I’m a big believer in looking at how people act in their other relationships. If they regularly have family and friend issues, or have dropped people in the past (like this person had), it’s probably more likely something to do with them over something you did. Especially, if you can’t think of something specific. So that is my relationship tip – get an idea of how people have behaved in the past to get an idea about how they will probably behave around you. I guess my pride has stopped me from confronting them, but in the end, I think it’s for the best that we went our separate ways.
