Balancing Family Life and Other Kinds of Hustle

Being an at-home mother is an entire job in and of itself. But having to work at the same time, especially something you’re hustling at, well you’re going to need all the help that you can get.

Before the pandemic even began, there were already mothers who worked at home while taking care of their families. Even though it’s an outdated gender role, the nurturing biological qualities of mothers made them ideal for this biologically assigned gender role. As the definition of what a modern woman has transformed over the last few decades, women are taking on both roles and the most ideal set-up for that is to work at home.

It’s always great to have your own income that you can spend on whatever you want – be it on your family’s needs or your own. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to sacrifice family life to earn your own income from the comfort of your home. Here are some tips to balance your work-at-home life with family life, while keeping your own sanity.

1. Take Your Time Off

Whether it’s a job at home or if you have your own business that you can operate from your home, making sure that you take your time off can help you stay productive and sane. You won’t be too stressed to take care of your kids because you’ll be able to learn how to stop thinking about work as soon as your workday ends. Sticking to a schedule that fits your lifestyle would be the first step into getting your body used to take its mind off of work as soon as you clock out.

You can also use this time off for your own personal hobbies, and other forms of self-care. Being a supermom can be overwhelming. But if you practice constant self-care, and if you have a personal routine that you use to keep an eye on your physical and mental health, it will really help deal with all of that stress. What’s more, is that you won’t lose yourself in the supermom role. You’ll still be able to take part in activities that make you happy while keeping your bank account and family happy as well.

2. Outsourcing

It’s okay to ask for help sometimes. When you’re a supermom, you’re running a tight ship, and getting help to make it all work can help you become even better at it. This doesn’t entirely refer to getting a maid to come and help clean now and then. It can mean getting someone to cook for you, help you with marketing for your own business, or maybe even just helping you out with emails.

For example, if you can get someone who’s skilled in e-commerce image editing to help market your business, you’re going to save so much of your time by not having to learn it all from scratch or brainstorming ideas. Outsourcing will allow you to take that moment of relief at the end of the day, knowing that there’s less work to be done the next day because you got someone else to do it for you.

Even though running a small business means that you’ll need to wear a lot of hats, it might be counterproductive to do so. Not everyone can do everything, even supermoms. Outsourcing jobs will help other people help you. They’ll be able to make some extra income while you grow your company and wear fewer hats. People you hire can help your business grow while you’re preparing your kids for school. There is no shame in asking for help. In fact, it’s a sign that you’re a real boss because you’ll be managing actual employees while keeping the title of supermom.

3. Dedicated Workspace

If you have a dedicated workspace, it will be a lot easier for you to stay in your mindset for work. You’ll be less distracted, and it can be a physical boundary that is plain to see by the members of your household. When they see you in that workspace, they’ll know that you’re busy and can’t be disturbed unless it’s important.

In the same way, as soon as you leave your workspace, you’ll be able to adjust your mind better to family life. You’ll be in a different environment than your workspace, and you’ll be able to spend time with your kids without having the pressure that your workspace usually provides. Creating boundaries, physically and mentally, will allow you to spend your time efficiently with less anxiety.

Even though it seems impossible, knowing when to put yourself first is one of the main ways to succeed as a supermom. If you’re less stressed and know how to avoid work and family life from overlapping while you’re at home, you’ll be able to communicate with your family and employees a lot better as well.
